Autism Network!!! MUSIC THERAPY?
March 22nd, 2010 by admin
I’d like to give to my son music therapy. Another Autism mom told me she bought her son’s equipment through Vital Sign online, but I haven’t found it. Where can I buy the headphone & CDs??? I don’t really have money to pay a Music Therapist for it, since it’d be much more expensive. Where can I get this stuff??? My son’s school OT told me she’d teach me to use the technique if I buy the CDs & headphone. She’s also searching where to find them but not successfully so far.

You can buy CD’s and headphones from Vital Sounds, but your OT will have to prescribe how to use the CD’s. This is not music therapy, but a technique used by trained OT’s called SOMONAS. It has benefits including behavior regulation and focus direction, among many others. Music therapy has greatly benefited my now 16 year old son. He’s been involved with music therapy since the age of 5. He plays piano and guitar, using his musical ability to break into social situations, relieve stress, and just have fun. School districts may pay for this "related service", so does Regional Center (if you live in California).
I tried music therapy with my autistic son. I was lucky it was the end of the year and our insurance dedictible was met so I could go to a trained therapist. I bought the recomended headphones on ebay for about 50% of the cost. The therapist let us borrow the cds and decide if we wanted to buy them. Music therapy did not work for us (or our neighbor aspie son) so I never bought the cds. If I had bought them I would have again gone to ebay, They we less money there for sure.
I don’t think a headphone will work for an autictic child, because most autistic children do not want anything touching their heads.
I suggest taking the autistic child to a live music event in order to see first-hand how the child reacts to music.
I took a 2 1/2 year old severely autistic boy to a live outdoor concert,
and he was more at-ease listening to the music and watching the audience, than he was at home.
You should also consider asking for a music therapy evaluation I have done this for a few children with autism and it has been put into their IEP as a related service. check out prelude to music website. You can request this as an evaluation
