What music degree should I get?

I want to be a music major in college. I play alot of instruments but want to major in violin. I don’t know what degree to apply for or what they really mean. I know music performance is probably a waste and I don’t particularly like to teach. I want to play in an orchestra and possibly compose. Would music composition have classes to help performance? What are music theory courses? What’s music therapy? What could I do with a BA in music?

As a music major my self, I have found that anything you do with music is going to somehow involve teaching. Even the best players end up teaching privately at a university. I am in no way bashing you, but only the best players end up in an orchestra and once they are in one are usually there for a very long time period.

Any music degree you choose will have classes in performance, history, literature, theory, and piano. But depending on what major you choose will determine what area you will receive more instruction. Music theory begins with basic aspects of reading and analyzing music and ends with some writing but mainly analysis, sight-reading, and ear training.
Therapy is an area when you try to heal through interaction with music and most often used on children with mental illness. There are many areas to pursue with music including church music and theory, but you will most likely teach but even more so if you decided to major in composition.
Go to any college website and you will be able to view the course listings for the degrees to see what kind of classes you will take.
